Our Commitment to Peace

Conflict is a natural part of life. Whether it escalates into violence or leads to positive change depends on how we deal with it. When conflicts are addressed constructively and those affected take an active role, just and lasting peace can emerge and grow. This is where our peacebuilding work begins.

Where divisions emerge, people are needed who can build bridges. This is where Pro Peace and our partners come in.

Nonviolent Conflict Transformation

The heart of our work is the nonviolent transformation of conflicts. By this, we mean the use of non-military strategies and methods to address conflicts in a constructive and nonviolent way—usually in close cooperation with civil society actors. What this looks like in practice depends on the specific context. For example, we strengthen dialogue between conflicting parties, support the reduction of hostile narratives, and promote processes of dealing with the past.

Pro Peace is fully committed—with their team, fresh ideas, and a genuine understanding of the situation. Others may only provide funding. Pro Peace creates momentum.

Nonviolent Conflict Transformation begins with a thorough conflict and context analysis, helping us identify where our work can make a meaningful difference. This ensures that our efforts have a lasting impact and do not unintentionally exacerbate existing tensions. Our peacebuilding work is carried out by international teams of qualified professionals, working in close partnership with experienced local organisations.

How We Work

Pro Peace is building peace on three levels: We promote the nonviolent transformation of conflicts, particularly in regions affected by war and crisis. We create spaces for learning and exchange. And we engage in peace advocacy.

We Transform Conflicts

At the heart of Pro Peace’s work are people and organisations committed to peace and nonviolence in conflicts around the world. We advise and support them in their efforts and implement joint projects together. Unlike many other organisations, Pro Peace does not only provide financial support—we also share the principles and methods of Nonviolent Conflict Transformation. In this way, our partners themselves become agents of peaceful change.

Pro Peace supports cities and municipalities across Germany in shaping processes of change, helping to ensure that peaceful coexistence can be sustained over the long term.

Since 2006, we are using our expertise in international peacebuilding to promote constructive conflict management on municipal level in Germany.

We Create Spaces for Learning

We are convinced that peace can be taught and learnt. At our Academy for Conflict Transformation, we provide advanced training for professionals from around the world in Nonviolent Conflict Transformation. Our approach is holistic: it combines the teaching of theories and principles of peace and conflict work with practical methods, as well as critical reflection on one’s own role and perspective.

In war and crisis zones such as Ukraine, Pro Peace is promoting the principles of non-violent communication.

In addition, we create opportunities for children and young people to engage with issues of peace, justice, and tolerance from an early age. A key element of this work is our Peace Runs, organised by students in various German cities, which combine learning, public advocacy for peace, and fundraising.

We Change Policies

We advocate for policies that actively contribute to building a more peaceful, sustainable, and just world. We call for greater investment in development cooperation, civil society engagement, and civic education. Through dialogue with policymakers, targeted campaigns, and strong networks, we bring our concerns into the public sphere and shape debates on peace policy.

In Israel and Palestine, Pro Peace supports Combatants for Peace—former fighters from both sides who now work together for a just peace.

Peace doesn’t come for free

Peace work is facing major challenges today: Civil society actors are under increasing pressure and state-ordered reprisals are on the rise. Above all, however, there is a lack of financial resources to implement sustainable projects and bring about long-term change.

Your donation will give us the independence we need to react flexibly to new challenges and continue our peace work. Become a part of Pro Peace and join us in our commitment to peace!
