Gender Perspectives in Kosovo History Textbooks

Women in focus of history teaching

forumZFD Kosovo currently implements the project "Gender Perspectives in History Textbooks" putting the role of women in focus of history teaching during the periods of peaceful resistance- parallel structures, and the armed resistance in Kosovo in the 1990s. The project addresses the lack of female perspectives in high school history curricula of grades IX to XII in Kosovo.

Whenever we talk about the history of Kosovo, we are always confronted with a patriarchal system which creates the impression that women have not been part of political and social movements in Kosovo. This phenomenon creates an environment which neglects and erases the role of women in important historical moments.

With this project we are combining research, results from focus groups and educational material (as a final product of the project) to bring back the importance of the role of women during those periods in Kosovo’s recent history.

On 29th of September 2021 a focus group gathered practitioners, lecturers and researchers of written and oral history, representatives of public institutions and civil society in Kosovo, to discuss and analyse how women's narratives are treated in conflict and war in schools.
