The promotion was organized with and for former political prisoners involved in the book, as a way of giving their contribution back and recognizing their willingness to cooperate in the process and to contribute to building up the public discourse on political activism and human rights violations in former Yugoslavia.
The event was organized at the premises of the Association of Political Prisoners, starting from 11.00. The opening remarks in the promotion were of: Selatin Novosella and Shefik Sadiku (Association of the Political Prisoners), Feride Rushiti (The Kosovar Center for Rehabilitation of Torture - KRCT), and Korab Krasniqi (forumZFD Kosovo program). In the ceremony, Korab Krasniqi, who led and researched (in) the project, was awarded with a ‘thank you’ note issued by the Association of the Political Prisoners.
'Prisoners of Conscience' explores the lifeworld of former political prisoners as a dynamic and active formation, examining the ways in which violent experiences in the prisoner's space, time, and body intertwine with strategies of resistance and resilience against violent and oppressive environments.
The book brings together memories of former political prisoners who survived time, violence, and oppression in confinement, contributing to the construction of narratives about political activism and dissent. This helps diversify collective memory and build a wider historiographical landscape on violence and wars in the former Yugoslavia.
The voices we hear through this book are those of (6) men and (4) women of different cultures and geographic environments in Kosovo, of different generations and periods of political persecution.
The premise of the book is that through storytelling and oral history, former political prisoners utilize discursive spaces to address issues about the past, history, and the ways societies deal with the legacy of war.
